NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins

I suppose time will tell if there was something in the Hawks game that got to Jonathan Quick, or if the star goalie simply had a string of bad games at the worst possible time for LA. There seemingly wasn’t a lot the Hawks did to rattle Quick other than find ways to beat him. And Duncan Keith’s goal to open the scoring on Saturday is still pretty baffling to me. Either way, the Blackhawks were facing perhaps the best goalie in the league coming in at damn near the top of his game and they found a way to beat him.

They’ll need to find whatever charm they used in the WCF and bottle it to save over the next few games because it looks like they’re going to have to do it all over again as they face the young Finn Tuukka Rask.

Thanks to Mick and Keith and their 10th and 11th full blood transfusions between the two of them, the Hawks and Kings will play their second game of the Western Conference Final about 24 hours on the nose after game 1 concluded. Whether or not that gives either team an advantage is debatable, but I’m sure both would have preferred a day off in between.

With both Western Conference finalists coming off a seven game series, there was little reason to doubt that Game 1 would not be the most aesthetically pleasing game to watch. Sure enough, that was the case as the Kings weren’t exactly frothing at the mouth for this one and the Hawks took full advantage to the tune of outshooting them 36-22, nearly outhitting the Kings and dictating the tempo of the game for the large majority.

On to the bullets.

In the next of a series of seemingly preordained matchups in the West, the Kings and Blackhawks will meet for the first time since 1974 in the post season for the right to ignore the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl. Both of these teams have been on similar trajectories after bottoming out in the middle of the previous decade, and already have their names etched in silver recently (as you might have heard). And though this is the first meeting between these iterations of these two teams of consequence, it hardly feels like it will be the last.

Jonathan-Quick

The Kings forwards aren’t going to make things easy on the Hawks defense, their defense isn’t quite as solid as last year but still big and strong enough that Chicago forwards will have to fight for every chance. But it’s in the crease where the Kings have their biggest advantage over the Hawks. In both series prior to this, it could be said Crawford was just as good if not better than the opposing team’s netminder. That’s not the case here. Jonathan Quick is once again taking his a solid regular season and turning it into a phenomenal post-season. If you were worried about Howard being able to steal a series, you’ll probably want to hide under your coffee table when you watch Quick.

Oh, hello again everyone. You recovered from Saturday’s festivities? Got some good brunch in you? Maybe a Bloody Mary? Good. It’s just about time for some afternoon hockey then.

This afternoon the Blackhawks face the reigning Champions for the second time this season. I’m sure we all remember how the first match up went but just in case you need a reminder, it was pretty damn awesome for the men of four feathers and their fans.

Still Suffering Stanley Cup Hangovers: The Royal Half/Jewels From The Crown

First things first – If you aren’t coming to Sheffield’s with us for the season opener… you’re blowing it and everything bad that may happen throughout the course of this season will likely be your fault. So get it together and come lose your mind with us.

Now that that’s out of the way… let’s talk some hockey. The last time we saw anything hockey related, we were watching captain Dustin Brown and the rest of the Kings skate the Stanley Cup around Los Angeles ice for the first time in franchise history. Then everything went black.
