NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings
So here’s the experiment. Every once in a while I have the idea that a “rally shot” will really help the fortunes of the Blackhawks. At the start of the period where the Hawks are down, usually the third, I will order a shot and not drink it until the Hawks score a goal. As soon as they do, I take the shot and order another. Repeat as necessary until the Hawks win the game (which means another shot) or if the lose, I pass it along to someone else. Very rarely does that seem to happen.

What this really means is that during the last 20 minutes of hockey, I consumed 4 shots along with a few beers. If this recap begins to make less and less sense and becomes riddled with more typos than usual… well, you can blame Fels. He was originally supposed to write this but might be in worst shape than I am right now.

In June of 2005, Lieutenant Michael Murphy led a four-man Seal team on a search for a Taliban leader in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province. Shortly into their mission, they were spotted by Taliban forces and a firefight broke out. Vastly outnumbered, around 50-100 Taliban to the 4 Navy Seals, Murphy and his team became pinned down in a steep ravine. Unable to get a radio signal from their position, Murphy left his cover and exposed himself in order to find a signal to call for help. While making the call, Murphy was shot several times but still managed to give support their position before picking up his rifle and re-joining the fight. Sadly, Murphy did not survive his wounds but thanks to his bravery, one member of his team did. Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Purple Heart and in 2012, a US Navy Destroyer was named in his honor.

Everyone have a safe Memorial Day. And to all the men and women serving, thank you.

Sometimes we choose a beard because we’re huge fans of their work. Sometimes it’s because they are an inspiration. Sometimes because it’s a funny choice. Sometimes because it’s appropriate for the occasion.

And sometimes because we just really like a dude’s beard. And I just really think this guy has a nice beard.

Not really sure why the uploader decided to bring race into it.. but whatever. (Please don’t go read the comments on Youtube… yikes)

Well, since I teased out the fact that our boy Whitman was a potential candidate for a BotD yesterday, which I’m sure a few of you noticed, I figured we might as well give the man our respect today. Whitman’s first major work was Leaves of Grass, which he started writing in the mid 1840’s, first published in 1855 and continued to update and edit until his death in 1892.

Though often clean-shaven and seeming un-aging, Paul Rudd is more than capable of rocking a fantastic beard when the time is right. Rudd got his first break in the movie Clueless, playing a dopey college student. He used that fame to get other minor roles in dramas and TV but really seemed to find a place when he fell into the role of Andy in The State’s Wet Hot American Summer, which still remains one of my favorite comedies.

Wait until after the finals are over and you may just finish up before the playoffs begin again in 2014. The book clocks in at just over 1,000 pages and is filled with topics ranging from tennis, substance abuse, film theory and like any good novel –  Quebecois terrorists. Infinite Jest isn’t going to be something that you’re able to fly through (it’s got more characters than Game Of Thrones and more footnotes than your senior thesis) but if you can make your way through it, it’s pretty incredible.
