Everything Else

It’s a rare weekend off for the Hawks, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t much to talk about. As you know by now, during the game last night the Hawks gave up this year’s 2nd rounder and a conditional pick next year that can be a 4th, 3rd, or 2nd depending on how far they go this spring for Kimmo Timonen.

It’s a strange one, for sure. Rarely, if ever, do you see a player who hasn’t played all year traded for, and actually a team giving up tangible assets to do so. This came only a few days after the Leafs trading for Nathan Horton, who is likely to never play again. Let us not say that NHL GMs haven’t gotten creative.

FLASH BEFORE MY EYES: Raw Charge

If the Hawks got to find their defensive feet, and overall game without Patrick Kane, against an offensive soft underbelly ready for tickling against the Panthers, they will swing wildly to the other end of the spectrum tonight. It’s also the second of a back-to-back and while in previous years the Hawks have excelled in this situation, this year they’ve been stunningly mediocre.

Somewhere, whoever actually runs the Hawks front office should crack open a beer or make a strong drink and breathe a sigh of relief that Patrick Kane’s surgery provides cover today that the Hawks once again missed out on a trade target that would have solved a lot of their problems. And they can sit back and watch as the Kings usurp the era that the Hawks have basically acted that they were entitled to.

It’s a story we’ve had to rehash far too many times the past two years. It’s after the parade, a time when perhaps you have to have the most amount of focus to see through the glow and what must be done. Everything looks a little glossier than it actually is and it’s easy to make a mistake, the ripples of which will be problems for years.

Everything Else

Hey the Hawks play that before every 3rd period at the UC, so I can use it.

Now that we have the cold light of day to refocus on everything, there’s some cleaning up to do.

While some have already begun speculating what the Hawks will do to fill in the gap left by Kane, that’s missing the point. The biggest problem isn’t at forward. It’s still on defense, and that’s where the Hawks focus has to be, for a multitude of reasons.

War On Ice

There would be more than enough to talk about in this one if there wasn’t one overriding issue. But seeing as how the Hawks’ entire season is hanging in the balance, there’s not much point in talking about much else at the top here.

From having watched enough of this, there are two outcomes tomorrow. Either Patrick Kane broke his collarbone and misses six weeks, which means he’s ready for Game 1. Or he completely busted it, needs surgery, is done for this season, and you can pack up the cats on this season. That’s what it feels like.

It’s come to me to clean this one up. Oh joy. I made sure to have my new favorite snack before I attempted this (peanut butter and rib belly sandwich. Trust me, it’s the tits). There’s a few games every year where it feels like something has truly gone wrong. And then you take a breath, a moment, and realize you didn’t learn anything new. It’s just some things about that particular defeat rankle more than normal.

The Avs are the Hawks’ bogey team. It doesn’t matter where they are in the standings or how they are playing. They’re just going to play well against the Hawks. It’s been going on for three seasons now. Maybe even five.

And hey, that pisses us all off. Because by any measure the Avs are not a good hockey team. They are coached by a lunatic who isn’t very good at his job (so might the Hawks be, but that’s another discussion for another time). They’ve learned all the wrong lessons about last year. They have annoying players up and down the lineup who have been made more annoying by their dumbass coach. No getting around it, not pounding them into dust sucks.

YOU’RE CAUSING MORE AVALANCHES: Mile High Hockey

You’d think at just about this time of year, there wouldn’t be things such as “trap” games. Either the Hawks are totally focused on the task at hand, or they’re running out the clock until April and every game is nothing more than a nuisance. I don’t think they’re there yet, but this one kind of fits in the pocket. They’re coming off big games against Eastern contenders Pittsburgh and Detroit. The Bruins arrive on Sunday afternoon, and while they’re struggling that would still have an extra spice. So the last-placed team in the division wouldn’t exactly angry up the blood like the others. You would hope previous struggles against the Avs, like January’s shutout loss, would have the blinders on for the Hawks. We’ll just have to see.
