Everything Else

So I’ll come clean with you all. Some of my sense of urgency and frustration with the Hawks roster management and such stems from this deep fear I have that I haven’t really talked about. It’s creeping around there though, as ridiculous as it seems on the surface. And it’s this fear that the center of which this team is built around, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, are closer to the end of their peaks than they are to the beginning.

I know, it sounds preposterous. But a lot of studies, including this one, show that a forward’s scoring peak hits around age 25. Well, Kane is 25 and Toews is now past that mark.

However, when I was poking around about this stuff yesterday waiting for printing to finish, I was leveled out by the fact that the Hawks have two other forwards who have stayed above this slide.

For the first time in like 58 meetings or some unholy number, the Flames actually marched into the United Center last November and emerged with two points thanks to Kris Russel’s seeing-eye overtime point shot that eluded Corey Crawford, one too many points left on the table by last year’s Hawks team. Both teams are in similar positions nearly a year later, with the Hawks maintaining championship aspirations, and the Flames still figuring out how to be competitive in the post Iginla era.

The Rockford IceHogs got the 2014-15 season underway this past Saturday at the BMO Harris Bank Center. The Milwaukee Admirals cast a pall on the festivities for the 5,228 fans in attendance, besting Rockford by a score of 3-2.

With just one contest in the books, I’m putting this opening game under a bit of a microscope. Here’s how the puck bounced for the IceHogs as they threw open the doors on the new campaign.

Everything Else

Not quarterback. I never wanted to be a quarterback. Too much responsibility. They made my QB once on the flag football team I played on in grade school. It sucked. I should have made this “Monday Morning 2nd Baseman.” That’s what I, and any other Cubs fan my age, wanted to be really.

Anyway, there’s a couple new things we’re trying here this season, and I’m hoping I have the discipline to stick with it. One is I’m going to rewatch every game, or at least most of them. This is something I promise myself I’ll do every season and never do but I mean it this time! Second, I’m helping (or trying and failing to help) Jen track zone entries for the Hawks this season. Just to see what there is to see.
