Everything Else

I’m not sure if it was just me being in a shitty mood combined with a lot of annoyance at my local bar (Seriously, how do you fuck up the chant “Let’s Go Blackhawks”? And don’t you know the only acceptable chant is “Let’s Go Hawks”? AND WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU CHANTING AT A TV?!?!) But was that perhaps the most boring playoff game you’ve seen form the Blackhawks in the past few years?

The Hawks weathered the early storm as the Wild came out with just about everything they could muster at this point. There was a lot of action in the Hawks end but not a lot of results. The Hawks grabbed the early lead off a pretty insane steal from Marian Hossa and a feed to Handzus. Zeus fired a shot on net that I guess hit Patrick Sharp on the way in. This was the only thing significant Handzus would do this game except for continuing to get murdered at the dot.

What do you do when you’ve created one of the most popular comic series going these days? You clearly turn it into one of the highest watched television series as well. Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead comic series and Executive Producer of the television show, is probably doing pretty well for himself these days based on the success of these two ventures.

Since starting the comic in 2003, he’s produced more than 100 issues and continues to get a lot of milage out of something as simple as a zombie presence. As people who are only watching the show may be starting to realize, it’s not always (and these days rarely ever) the zombies that are the true threat. It’s also great to see that show and the books have become pretty drastically different entities while maintaining the same overall feel. There are different characters, different story lines and quite a few surprising deaths.

In somewhat of a role-reversal, I couldn’t fucking sit still or stop swearing tonight (OK, I always swear a lot) and Fels was cool as a… well, not a cucumber. Maybe a zucchini? Are those cool? Some sort of squash or gourd, I guess. Are squashes and gourds even mutually exclusive? I don’t get horticulture.

While the Blackhawks didn’t make it easy for themselves, they never really seemed like they were getting outplayed. The early goal from the Wild (from Clutterbuck on a softie… because of course that would happen) didn’t inspire much confidence but it wasn’t a dagger in the hearts of the UC either. The Wild scored, we groaned but anyone who thought the Hawks would be shutout for the game was kidding themselves. The Hawks didn’t panic. They came back to their game and they found a way to score one on the advantage and then take it in a longish OT. 15.

Fresh off from showing that skill is an ultimate trump card, the Hawks head back up 55 to face the Stars who have been patiently waiting for them here in Chicago. This is a Stars team that’s quite different from the one we saw a month ago as the Hawks made sure DLR was up and ready early on as they cruised to an 8-1 victory. Things hadn’t been going the Stars way for most of the year and it seemed as if their front office realized it. So gone are Michael Ryder, Brenden Morrow and of course Jaromir Jagr. In came a few pieces and parts that could help the Stars in the future.

And just like that, the Red Wings are no longer a division rival (unless there’s a playoff matchup… which would be a pretty awesome send off). Sadly, this game didn’t quite have the energy of the March 3rd back and forth playoff-like battle.. and it wasn’t the pantsing that we say last time they met. But it’s another win. And it clinches the division. And that’ll do.

Also, I really like this game picture because it looks like they’re playing with a huge novelty sized puck.
