Holding On: Defending Big D

Fresh off from showing that skill is an ultimate trump card, the Hawks head back up 55 to face the Stars who have been patiently waiting for them here in Chicago. This is a Stars team that’s quite different from the one we saw a month ago as the Hawks made sure DLR was up and ready early on as they cruised to an 8-1 victory. Things hadn’t been going the Stars way for most of the year and it seemed as if their front office realized it. So gone are Michael Ryder, Brenden Morrow and of course Jaromir Jagr. In came a few pieces and parts that could help the Stars in the future.

FUNNY LOOKIN’ IN A GENERAL KINDA WAY: Hockey Wilderness

It would appear the over-arching theme of tonight’s game is our coach once again deciding to create a controversy and make himself (and no one else) feel like a genius. Ray Emery will get the start again, for reasons you’ll have to figure out yourself. I got nothin’.

It’s not a matter of seeing if Emery can go back-to-back, because he did this weekend. It’s not about riding a roll, because Emery was basically “meh” on Sunday. This isn’t about establishing a goalie platoon (which he shouldn’t be doing anyway), because if it was then Crawford would be rotated in.

Everything Else

Well that wasn’t exactly what we expected, was it? Even in our preview of the game, we imagined that the Predators would come out hard to try and fight for their playoff dreams and the Hawks would have to fight them off desperately in the first. If the Hawks survived that barrage, they would have to make sure they drew first blood and then held on tight to survive the third, where all too often they seem to take their foot off the gas.

Instead, the Predators came out weak in the first and were thoroughly outplayed by the Hawks. The Hawks outshot the Preds 17-7 in the period but of course one sloppy pass led to a turnover and a tie game after one. The second was more of the same, as the Hawks outshot the Preds and carried the play but again found themselves in an even game after 40. The third seemed to be heading down a familiar road before Saad and Toews found the net to take the win. Patrick Kane adds to his point total to ice it and the Blackhawks find themselves the first team to secure a spot in the post-season for the year. Not a bad way to end the week.

DON’T TELL ME NO LIES AND KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF: On The Forecheck

These used to be a regular thing in an NHL schedule. I remember a time when it felt like the Hawks and Leafs played about 15 weekend back-to-backs against each other per season, with the Saturday in Toronto and the return back on Madison. They seem to have gone away now, which is a shame. Maybe with the division schedule next year, they’ll return a little. We shall see.
