Everything Else

I have to admit to getting a real joy out of the no-context hockey of the past two nights. There are things I could try and make something out of. But I can’t convince myself that they really matter. Yeah, another attacked-by-bees effort from Crawford. A second night in a row a team with all the offensive punch of a possum on anti-depressants was able to muster a mountain of 3rd period shots. Some very sloppy play from the Hawks all over.

But it just feels more like a common cold to be shirked than a stronger disease sinking in. I guess we’ll find out more tomorrow night, where it’s probably not possible to treat any game against Vancouver as just another one to be ticked off the schedule.

But hey, you come for bullets.

It’s a weird limbo the Hawks find themselves in in this final week of the regular season. For all intents and purposes the games don’t matter, for both the Hawks and their opposition. Though tonight’s opponent in Phoenix does have the slightest sliver of hope, however futile it might be.

HONKY TONK BLUES: On The Forecheck

Since the Jackets handed the Hawks the Western Conference’s top seed with their win in Disneyland, the rest of this season has been pretty much rendered a playoff tech-week. That is unless you care about The Presidents’ Trophy, and I think there’s a pretty even split among Hawks fans whether you do or not. I see both sides of it, but whatever. No one’s going to shed a tear if it doesn’t end up residing here. But we’ll think it’s kind of cool if it does.

To start the end of this schedule, the complete mess and completely finished Nashville Predators show up at the UC for the 27th time this month. Or so it seems.

Fresh off from showing that skill is an ultimate trump card, the Hawks head back up 55 to face the Stars who have been patiently waiting for them here in Chicago. This is a Stars team that’s quite different from the one we saw a month ago as the Hawks made sure DLR was up and ready early on as they cruised to an 8-1 victory. Things hadn’t been going the Stars way for most of the year and it seemed as if their front office realized it. So gone are Michael Ryder, Brenden Morrow and of course Jaromir Jagr. In came a few pieces and parts that could help the Stars in the future.

FUNNY LOOKIN’ IN A GENERAL KINDA WAY: Hockey Wilderness

It would appear the over-arching theme of tonight’s game is our coach once again deciding to create a controversy and make himself (and no one else) feel like a genius. Ray Emery will get the start again, for reasons you’ll have to figure out yourself. I got nothin’.

It’s not a matter of seeing if Emery can go back-to-back, because he did this weekend. It’s not about riding a roll, because Emery was basically “meh” on Sunday. This isn’t about establishing a goalie platoon (which he shouldn’t be doing anyway), because if it was then Crawford would be rotated in.
