Everything Else

Just a quick note here on Drew LeBlanc, the Hobey Baker winner whom the Hawks signed last night to a one year deal, or essentially for the rest of this season.

When you first hear that the player who won the award for best college player this season is coming to your team, it might sound like a big deal. It’s not, or tends not to be. Much like college basketball, if you stick around the college ranks in hockey to compete for the Hobey Baker award, either you’re a phenom who lorded over the competition or stuck around long enough for your senior year because you weren’t good enough to go pro.

Looking at the list of past Hobey Baker Award winners, you won’t get out of your seat. There was a lot of hubbub over Matt Gilroy, and he’s pretty much been a poor man’s…..poor man. Blake Geoffrion may have become something one day, but now we’ll never know thanks to his horrific injury. Kevin Porter? Matt Carle? You really have to go all the way back to 2002 and Ryan Miller to find an impact NHL-er who also won hockey’s top prize.

FUNNY LOOKIN’ IN A GENERAL KINDA WAY: Hockey Wilderness

It would appear the over-arching theme of tonight’s game is our coach once again deciding to create a controversy and make himself (and no one else) feel like a genius. Ray Emery will get the start again, for reasons you’ll have to figure out yourself. I got nothin’.

It’s not a matter of seeing if Emery can go back-to-back, because he did this weekend. It’s not about riding a roll, because Emery was basically “meh” on Sunday. This isn’t about establishing a goalie platoon (which he shouldn’t be doing anyway), because if it was then Crawford would be rotated in.

Smash & Dash: On The Forecheck

With the Hawks’ win at the Tire Fire yesterday, they now stand on the precipice of being the first team in the league to officially clinch a playoff berth. The 9th place Coyotes currently sit at 40 points with 10 games left to play, which would max them out at 60 points. However, if the Coyotes were to win out in regulation and were the Hawks to lose out in regulation, they’d be tied but the Yotes would have more regulation and overtime wins. However, all of that is rendered immaterial today with a single point, and the Hawks will have officially gained entrance to the post season party, despite standing outside and waiting for it to open since mid-February.

DON’T TELL ME NO LIES AND KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF: On The Forecheck

These used to be a regular thing in an NHL schedule. I remember a time when it felt like the Hawks and Leafs played about 15 weekend back-to-backs against each other per season, with the Saturday in Toronto and the return back on Madison. They seem to have gone away now, which is a shame. Maybe with the division schedule next year, they’ll return a little. We shall see.
