From one state with legal weed to another, tonight the Hawks find themselves in Boston to take on a B’s team that is once again teetering on the edge of missing the playoffs for a third straight year, and rumors of Claude Julien’s giant bald head being on the chopping block dominate any discussion about the Bruins.
It should not have had to be that difficult, but at this juncture of the season, any way the points come in regulation is quite alright. And with a nice little bonus of both the Wild and Blues losing in regulation, what looked to be quickly spiraling out of control suddenly turned into a fairly positive night. Mostly.
Despite not having John present and the season being all but over after this past weekend, the other three of us still manage to absolutely beat to death a couple of our favorite subjects: Why is Jonathan Toews bad now, and why is Trevor van Riemsdyk bad always. January 15th, 2017: the day that everyone had to accept the Minnesota Wild and their dipshit coach as their new overlords. Of course, with the Hawks blowing a two goal lead at home to a team that played the night before, they certainly deserved to lose, even to this team.

Bernie Would Have Won: Japer’s Rink, RMNB
In years past, even for a mid January game, had both the Hawks and Capitals been carrying the two longest current winning streaks in the league (Caps at 7, Hawks at 4) there would be such a clamor over yet another POTENTIAL STANLEY CUP FINAL MATCHUP that it’d be deafening. But with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild on an inexorable collision course for June, it seems that tonight’s game in DC is simply old news to most.
Perhaps the most damning evidence of what this “rivalry” has become is that none of the four of us watched anywhere close to the entirety of this game, while the Wings Blogosphere is filling their diapers about the refereeing in the game as if this season isn’t completely lost for them anyway. Let’s piece all this together.

It seems like every single year the Hawks manage to have played more games than anyone in the first half of the season, with the entire rest of their division having games in hand up until the final week of the season. It wasn’t supposed to be like this for the Sabres, who were supposed to take whatever “THE NEXT STEP” is supposed to be this year. But once again they find themselves in the Eastern Conference cellar, and make their lone visit to the UC tonight.

Fireman Ed’s Cousin Gord: Illegal Curve
In what was a tradition unlike any other, the Hawks for seemingly eons played a home game on West Madison on Boxing Day, and even during the Stone Ages the building was more packed than usual. The league in its wisdom has opted to extend the holiday break, pushing the return to action to the 27th, and even giving the Hawks a road game or two in recent years on the date. But tonight will be as close to the Boxing Day games of yore as the league will allow, and the Hawks will be welcoming the Jets to the UC once again already.
