Everything Else

10thMountainFire posted this as a comment in our morning links. But we thought it deserved its own post. If you’ve been wondering lately after the lockout why you bother, this should remind you pretty firmly. And we as well would like to thank him for his service, as well as making the three of us extremely proud of what we do here, no matter how silly it can seem at times.

Please excuse this post, especially the length… but I love you guys here and I want to share something that means a lot to me as a Hawks fan.

Last night I had one of the most incredible and surreal experiences of my life and I’m compelled to leave it here in order to reinforce the idea we have about what a special organization the Chicago Blackhawks are.

Everything Else

I know we get Simpsons heavy on this blog, but sometimes the analogies are just so apt. Tonight’s game felt like Homer Simpson’s boxing tactics. The Hawks allowed the Wings to repeatedly, and futilely, punch them about the face until they tired themselves out. Except the Hawks never really got to the point where they simply pushed them over. At least until after they’d surrendered a point to a division rival that they didn’t have to.

Once again, this was post-lockout hockey at its most glorious. If by glorious I mean tired, sloppy, and just kind of all over the place. And it is strange indeed for the Hawks to spend a large swath of a contest trying to serve it on a plate to Detroit, and watching Detroit merely stare at the silverware trying to figure out which one was the salad fork.

To let the Wings in these days when they’re such a mess, you have to continually give them power plays and be sloppy in your own end. Check. And yet they couldn’t take advantage, mostly because the entry on their power play looked like a bank robbery planned by ADHD-riddled children. But hey, you take your advantages where you can find them I guess.

So it’s six in a row to start the year, before embarking on a pretty nasty looking six game road trip (looking even nastier with each San Jose win).

Not Getting Any Younger: Winging It In Motown

The Hawks can attempt to make history as a victory today will break the franchise record for best start, something this team tied last night as I’m sure you’re all aware by this point. It’s almost fitting then that the Hawks will attempt this record against their biggest rivals (at least historically). After last night’s game that was harder than it ought to have been the Hawks get no time to rest as the Scum have been waiting in Chicago since Friday’s victory over the Preds.

Everything Else

With everyone and their brother braying about the Hawks’ best start since the Nixon administration, Columbus being the perpetual punching bag they’ve been, and Scum waiting here in town for their first visit to the U.C. this year, pretty much everything about tonight absolutley screamed “trap game”. And it pretty much played out that way until the final horn sounded.

Sorry, couldn’t figure out how to get an umlaut into the title. I can do it here though if you want me to make up for it. ü. There you go.

Edit: Umlaut achieved.

The Hawks try to push it to five tonight in Ohio, against the carcass that the other carnivores in the Central have been scavenging off for years. And that will probably remain the case this year as well, as the Blue Jackets continue the bobbing for Seth Jones competition they are in.
