Make It Eight: Five For Howling
Moving gradually eastward, the Blackhawks head into their penultimate stop on the Ice Show road trip, Jobing.Com Arena to take on the Coyotes. Due to the unrelenting will of the schedule as a result of the oh-so-brilliant-and-productive lockout, after tonight the Hawks will have played as many games in the desert as they have on West Madison.
In the wake of the most controversial aspect of last night’s game, Andrew Desjardin’s hit on Jamal Mayers and Duncan Keith’s subsequent response, I’d like to offer a long form dissenting opinion to Sam’s approval of the actions taken.
It’s been a while since it felt like the Hawks were playing a regular season game that was central to the hockey world. Saw a bunch of tweets and columns today from non-Sharks or Hawks affiliated people today. I don’t think anyone would say they were disappointed in the entertainment provided.
There really is no such thing as a “statement game.” It’s fun to think there is, and it feels better when you win one to think there is, but it’s kind of a myth. Who knows how we’ll regard this result in a month or two. But other than getting a win in San Jose for the first time in three seasons, beating your closest competitor, and now guaranteeing the minimum amount of points we all agreed was necessary for a successful road trip, we learned a couple things. Possibly. Though I wonder if any of them will be the overriding theme.

Cage In The Water: Fear The Fin
While ten games into a season might be too soon for a “measuring stick” game in any other year, for this shortened campaign, that’s equal to over 20% of the entire season. Given that circumstance, it’s entirely appropriate for these two teams to use tonight to judge where they’re going for the rest of the year. Tonight features a matchup of the two best teams in the conference, with a grand total of 5 points lost between the two out of a possible combined 36, and a single solitary regulation loss.
Time again for our jog around the continent, and that other one across the pond….well, they’re all across some pond, but the one to the north and across that Atlantic where they speak 50 some languages and some have the same currency but some don’t and everyone dreams of chilling out in Ibiza or the Algarve.
Quiet weekend for Phillip Danault for Moncton. He had an assist in two games and was a -1.
In Victoriaville, Brandon Whitney had two wins. He stopped 22 of 23 in the first and 35 of 38 in the second.

Burn Motherfucker Burn: Flames Nation
The past few years haven’t been kind to the Flames. For a time, it seemed the Flames were only just finding a center for Iginla away from getting to the promised land. Then calls to start tearing the team apart (and usually rebuild around Iggy.. sometimes trade him) became more frequent. Sadly, the Flames are never quite bad enough to really justify a total re-build but certainly never good enough to actually have anyone take them seriously.
This year, things may finally be different though – They’ve got just a single win in 5 games and were most recently seen getting kicked in the dick in only 3 minutes by an Avalanche team that isn’t really scaring anyone. Could this year finally be the one where the Flames pull the plug and trade their captain? Does anyone still want him? Does everyone realize Iggy’s full name is Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla?
Oh wait, of course it isn’t because their GM, Jay Feaster, puts detergent in his oatmeal everyday.
