Natural Stat Trick

Even the next day I’m not sure where to begin this. So let’s flip it and look at it how a Ducks fan (if there is such a thing) might look at it. You still haven’t lost in regulation, and had Corey Crawford not put on two borderline-incredible overtime performances in Games 2 and 4, this series might already be over. Your 3rd period magic has now worked both ways, in that the Ducks were able to protect leads, and rather easily, rather easily in Games 1 and 3. And then there was that comeback, which has been a Ducks specialty this season, in Game 4. You’ve rolled the Hawks in the overtimes, they still only have four ES goals in the series. So yeah, things probably look pretty rosy, even if you think you can’t waste a three goals in 37 seconds burst like that.

In Joel Quenneville’s seven year tenure as the Hawks’ coach, there has not been a single postseason wherein his squad has not trailed in a series at some point, including twice in each respective year that ended in a parade. So tonight’s Game 4 at home against the Ducks is not new territory for his team. But Game 3 certainly rocketed up the charts as one of his all-time coaching boners in what is already a greatest hits collection. The Ducks took advantage, and now tonight results in a crucial, near must-win for the home team.

Event Summary

War on Ice

Let’s take a trip in the way back machine to June 17, 2013. It was Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks or as it’s better known, the day Jonathan Toews centered the 4th line. The Hawks had 28 shots on goal in a 2-0 loss that gave the Bruins a 2-1 series lead.  Marian Hossa was a late scratch and the Hawks revealed prior to the game it was due to a upper body injury.

I mention this game because it marks the last time Joel Quenneville made roster decisions that defy any resemblance of logic.

Which takes us to today. With the Hawks and Ducks tied in the series at one game apiece and the Hawks looking to defend home ice, the decision was made to replace Teuvo Terravainen and Antoine Vermette with Kris Versteeg and Joakim Nordstrom. After the game, Quenneville said it was for fresh legs. So take that to mean…whatever.

As the series shifts back to the United Center and the Hawks play at home for the first time in 18 days, they bring with them the requisite split of the first two games on the road to put themselves in solid position as the series moves forward. And coming off the longest game in franchise history just 42 hours ago, both the Hawks and the Ducks will have their depth and endurance tested tonight.

jesse keeler

As half of the Canadian duo, noise masters Death From Above 1979, bassist Jesse Keeler consistently lays down thick, fuzzed out grooves that double as the actual melodies for their jams while sporting a full jet black beard. His beard is so impressive that it has appeared on both of the band’s album covers. DFA are known for their deafeningly loud shows, an environment that’s hopefully replicated tonight on West Madison.
