YO! MTV CAPS: Japer’s Rink, Russian Machine Never Breaks

Well, it’s finally here. The landmark the season kind of pivots around. With the holidays over and the season about to head into it’s interminable slog phase, and almost right on the halfway point, the NHL has its winter landmark. It’s the Winter Classic… between two teams who have no history with each other at a venue that wouldn’t even be close to old enough to drive yet. But hey, let’s enjoy it anyway, right? The NHL regular season offers no other more singular stage than this one.

    Shutdown Corner

Ed Note: This ran in last night’s print edition.

While last year the air raid sirens from the Hawks’ broadcast booth began before Halloween proclaiming Duncan Keith to be the prohibitive Norris Trophy favorite as the league’s best defenseman, most notably in the form of the insufferable Ed Olczyk, this year things have been far quieter in that department. And that’s quite a shame, because while it’s taking nothing away from Keith’s previous Norris campaigns last year and in 2010, by many statistical measures he’s having far and away his best season as a professional. And that he’s doing it at 31 while already being as decorated a player as there is in the league with two Cups, two Gold Medals, and two Norrises to his name.

    War On Ice

    Natural Stat Trick

As we feared, the odd travel schedule left the Hawks somewhat off their game. It wasn’t the prettiest or cleanest game from either side. Luckily, that side is way worse than this one, and the Hawks didn’t need to pull out the glossy stuff to pretty easily see this out. God I love it when the Avs suck.

    Let’s not waste any time…

Once again, the Hawks and Avs will meet the day after Boxing Day, this time reversing venues and playing in The Pop Can in Denver. The Hawks will hope it goes a little better for them than it did the Avs last year, where DLR was called in from the pen in the 2nd period.

    Event Summary

    War On Ice

I’ve provided the usual stat pages, but this one doesn’t need much analyzing. I feel it would be somewhat callous to blame the Hawks simply not being at the races in the 1st period on everything they’ve been through the past few days, but I don’t think it’s incorrect either. Considering there’s a three day break after this one, and teams rarely get three days off during an NHL season–the All-Star break is pretty much it–combined with the emotional roller coaster of the past four days, the Hawks can be forgiven for just coughing up a hairball tonight. Especially when you have their record over the past month, which is 13-3-1. That’ll do.

THEIR CITY WAS GONE: Jackets Cannon

If Captain Fred were here… BLUE JACKETS!

The Hawks make their one trip to Ohio this season to take on the Blue Jackets this evening. Or to put it better, what’s left of the Blue Jackets. Because no one is carrying the injury list that the Jackets are at the moment. It kind of looks like the scene in Gone With The Wind out there.
