REVERSE METATRON: Winging It In Motown

For the first time in this playoff run, the sphincters are tightening just a bit. The Hawks face some actual adversity. While this isn’t a must-win game for them — any of the two in Bailout Town will do, really — you wouldn’t want to be around if the Hawks actually trail in this series. Combined with a bounce back needed from the condor egg the Hawks laid on Saturday afternoon, and we all could use a fiery effort tonight.

  • Beard Of The Day – May 21st – Paul Rudd

    Paul+Rudd+2013+Film+Independent+Spirit+Awards+f00n1AuwMXhx

Though often clean-shaven and seeming un-aging, Paul Rudd is more than capable of rocking a fantastic beard when the time is right. Rudd got his first break in the movie Clueless, playing a dopey college student. He used that fame to get other minor roles in dramas and TV but really seemed to find a place when he fell into the role of Andy in The State’s Wet Hot American Summer, which still remains one of my favorite comedies.

  • Beard Of The Day – May 18th – David Foster Wallace

david-foster-wallace-2d7939a867950051042d8032609ff97d55b73b19-s6-c10If you’ve never attempted to read Infinite Jest, doing so during the playoffs is probably not a good time to start. Wait until after the finals are over and you may just finish up before the playoffs begin again in 2014. The book clocks in at just over 1,000 pages and is filled with topics ranging from tennis, substance abuse, film theory and like any good novel –  Quebecois terrorists. Infinite Jest isn’t going to be something that you’re able to fly through (it’s got more characters than Game Of Thrones and more footnotes than your senior thesis) but if you can make your way through it, it’s pretty incredible.

  • If You Can Hear A Piano Fall: Scum 4 – Hawks 1 (Series Tied 1-1)

If You Can Hear A Piano Fall: Scum 4 – Hawks 1 (Series Tied 1-1)

After Game 1 Mike Babcock declared that the 4-1 scoreline was perfectly justified to represent how the game went. After Game 2, Joel Quenneville was just as assured that this 4-1 scoreline was indicative of what went on. Both were perfectly correct.

While it’s hardly cause for panic or tearing one’s hair out (if you’re unlike me and have any), Detroit was the far better team today. At times, it felt as if the Hawks felt as if it would be as easy as it was in Game 1 for the final 40 minutes. However, that completely discounts that they’re playing the DETROIT RED WINGS. While it’s something you can’t quantify, no matter the talent or speed deficit, the players on that team do come with a bathtub of pride and are not simply going to let anyone have their way.

Yeah, I know. That speaks to a “flatness.” But that’s a component today. The Hawks were just simply not working as hard as Detroit, who made it clear they knew they had to have this game (which they did). The Hawks didn’t match that. That’s not the whole reason they lost today, but it’s definitely part of it.

It’s So Cold In The D: Winging it in MotownAbel to Yzerman

After a pretty much textbook victory on Wednesday, the Blackhawks are simply going to look to do it all over again this afternoon. It makes writing these previews pretty difficult when all you have to say is… 60 more minutes of that again, please.

Both teams used the first period of Game 1 to get re-acquainted with each other and headed to the first intermission with an even score. While the score remained even in the second, the feel of the game was vastly different. The Hawks were clearly outplaying Scum. The three goals in the third period just seemed like they were a given.
