Bring out the tired old tropes of the first game back at home after a long road trip being a let down. They’re certain to get flogged elsewhere. But historically the Hawks have been pretty successful coming home from both the Circus and the Capades under Quenneville, and they probably would have been too tonight were it not for some bad luck and Mike Smith channeling competency for the first time in a while.

It’s been 20 days since we put the word “Hawks” after the “at” in the title, and now we’re going to do it eight straight times over a span of 15 days. No one can seem to remember a stretch of homes games like this happening in these parts, so it’s a new experience for all. And it’s a real chance for the Hawks to still be counted in the race for the Central Division, or at least home ice in the first round. Eight points is a ton to make up, but then again you rarely get eight straight home games and 11 of 13, and 12 of 16 to do so.

It wasn’t the prettiest of road trips but somehow the Hawks head back to Chicago with 8 points and a 4-3-0 record for their last extended road trip of the season. This victory couldn’t have come at a better time for the Hawks. They’re pulling away from the Jets and closing the gap on the Blues/Preds. Now the Hawks will get 8 in a row at the UC against a few softball opponents and a few that should provide a good gauge on just where the Hawks are in the league.

The last step of the trip is almost certainly the hardest, so why not make it at an awkward morning start just for kicks? The Hawks will step into the hornets’ nest this morning. If hornets smelled way worse than they do and were on a fuckton of meth. Such is a Sunday morning coming down in Missouri.
Michael Hutchinson stopped 91% of the shots thrown at him tonight and that doesn’t come close to his season save percentage against the Hawks previously this season. In their previous three meetings, Hutchinson only allowed 3 goals on almost 100 shots.
I hear that’s pretty good.

Seems strange but this is the first visit the Hawks have into Manitoba this season. I believe Arizona is the only other Western Conference city the Hawks have yet to travel to, and they’re out of the division. And this shapes up as a pretty big one for a variety of reasons: how the Hawks’ trip and specifically the last game have gone, the Jets current spiral, and the utter goofiness that’s taking place up there.
