Ghost With A Boner: On The Forecheck

It never seems to fail, whether it’s a front-loaded or back-loaded schedule, but the Hawks always seem to face the Predators in rapid fire bursts. This year is no exception, with the two teams meeting up tonight at the United Center for the first time this season, followed by another here next weekend before both wrap up the regular season in Nash Vegas on April 12th. But obviously tonight is of more pressing concern.

If you look simply at the first period stats, minus the goals obviously, you might assume the Hawks were in danger once again of getting their asses handed to them. The team that averages only 27 shots against per game allowed 17 total in the first period. Those stats are so out of whack given the 3 trips the Hawks took to the penalty box in the opening twenty. Three trips to the box are always going to be bad but that’s especially bad when the team is also near the bottom of the league in PK%.

Sure enough, the Predators were able to score on their opening power play when Seabrook failed to clear the puck and the Hawks ran around their own zone like teenagers who snuck into the Playboy Mansion. Raanta made a few big saves but couldn’t find a slapshot from Shea Weber. Though to be fair… most goalies aren’t going to be able to stop that guy if he gets a few chances to really wind up.

BLOGS OF THE BRIDGESTONE: On The Forecheck

Back to the scene of one of the crimes. The last time the Hawks sauntered down I-65 they got smacked around but good thanks to Nikolai Khabibulin’s groin crumbling under the weight of his paycheck/liver and Corey Crawford pulling the full Dante “I’m not even supposed to be here today.” Hopefully, things will go a little better tonight.

GEORGIA SATELLITES APPRECIATION SOCIETY: On The Forecheck

Have to say I don’t remember the Hawks ever playing a Sunday game in Nashville. In fact, I don’t remember them every playing an away, Sunday evening game anywhere other than Vancouver, but you all can correct me on that. Seems like Sunday nights are a home tradition, but such is the schedule concoction this year.

Over the next couple days, you’ll hear the traditional, roll-out-the-cliche drivel that the last game of a road trip and the first game home after a road trip are so hard on teams. We heard it so much last year the talk may have actually caused the Hawks to mail in a couple of these, not the other way around.
