Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely: Hockey Wilderness

For the first time since Patrick Kane terminated their season 8 months ago for the second straight year, the Hawks will square off against the Wild. And Minnesota comes into tonight very much in the same limbo as the one that left them looking for any kind of answer over the summer.

For the second time in as many playoff years, the Hawks will take the brief trek up to St. Paul and the Xcel Energy center with a two game series lead having successfully held serve on West Madison St. And for the second time in as many years, the Wild and their fans figure to treat tonight as a do-or-die proposition within the context of their season.

Reintroducing: Hockey Wilderness

For the second time this playoff season, the inevitable playoff matchup between the Blackhawks and the Colorado Avalanche has failed to happen, this time not only because of the Blues’ incompetence, but because of the math finally catching up to the Avs in the form of the Minnesota Wild. The result is now a rematch of last season’s first round few could have predicted happening at all, let alone in the second round.

Somebody To Shove: Hockey Wilderness

After an excruciating and seemingly interminable three days off filled with speculation and meatballery, the Blackhawks at long last get back to actually playing games that matter in the standings, rather than those more concerned with second guessing and dick measuring. They’ll do so against the visiting Wild, who have for the most part owned the Hawks this year, and are looking to get closer to clinching their second straight playoff berth.

WILDSIDE, WILDSIDE: Hockey Wilderness

No time to fret or rest, as the Hawks will turn it right around tonight to take on the Minnesota Wild. Whatever complaints there were about yesterday’s effort can be quickly solved, and the Hawks usually do that in both the second of a back-to-back as well as after a rather tame effort. Generally, they haven’t doubled up the half-hearted outings. And even if they do, they might not need top gear or anything resembling it to get past a crumbling Minnesota team.

With a three point Florida swing now in the books, the Hawks will return home for only their third divisional game so far this season. Tonight it comes in the form of new divisional opponent Minnesota, who some may or may not remember as being the first stop on a nice little tour last summer.

With the series now shifting setting to the Twin Cities, the Wild were essentially facing a must-win situation, and decided to change things up a bit from their neutral zone bomb shelter strategy that yielded no results on West Madison.

Even with the Hawks drawing the first marker on a beautiful feed from Patrick Kane to Johnny Oduya right after a Hawks kill, the Wild pressed on. Coach Mike Yeo made no secret about wanting to ratchet up the physicality and make life unpleasant for Hawk defenders, and did just that, sending wave of cannonballing forwards into the Hawk zone.

File Under: Easy Listening: Hockey Wilderness

In the two days since the Hawks came out flat, taking far longer to dispatch the Wild than many were expecting or would have liked, the Blues and Penguins have already won the Stanley Cup a couple of times over, so tonight’s Game 2 between the Hawks and Wild is more than likely an exercise in futility. But in spite of all of that, the two teams are going to play anyway.

And so it begins. Since Patrick Kane announced the Hawks’ presence to the defending champ Kings on a Saturday afternoon on January 19th, this is the date that Hawks fans have waited patiently for. It’s time for this collection on the ice to prove it’s not the first-round-out it has been the last two seasons, nor is it a hollow collection of records accumulated during an asterisk of a regular season.
