And So It Continues- Blackhawks 1, Red Wings 1 (Blackhawks win Skee-ball Competition 1-0)

Stop me if you heard this before: The Blackhawks and Red Wings played a Sunday matinee at Joe Louis Arena that ended in a shootout.

In the last four seasons, it seems like the two teams have engaged in roughly 33 games that followed the script from today.  One team controls the tempo, then the other team.  By the end of regulation, one of the teams scores a late goal to send the game to overtime and in the overtime, both teams have opportunities for the winner.

In other words, today’s game was no different than any of the previous years between the Hawks and Wings.  Except for that whole winning streak the Hawks have going.  So let’s get to it.

You Forgot To Push Him Over: Scum 1 – Hawks 2 (OT)

I know we get Simpsons heavy on this blog, but sometimes the analogies are just so apt. Tonight’s game felt like Homer Simpson’s boxing tactics. The Hawks allowed the Wings to repeatedly, and futilely, punch them about the face until they tired themselves out. Except the Hawks never really got to the point where they simply pushed them over. At least until after they’d surrendered a point to a division rival that they didn’t have to.

Once again, this was post-lockout hockey at its most glorious. If by glorious I mean tired, sloppy, and just kind of all over the place. And it is strange indeed for the Hawks to spend a large swath of a contest trying to serve it on a plate to Detroit, and watching Detroit merely stare at the silverware trying to figure out which one was the salad fork.

To let the Wings in these days when they’re such a mess, you have to continually give them power plays and be sloppy in your own end. Check. And yet they couldn’t take advantage, mostly because the entry on their power play looked like a bank robbery planned by ADHD-riddled children. But hey, you take your advantages where you can find them I guess.

So it’s six in a row to start the year, before embarking on a pretty nasty looking six game road trip (looking even nastier with each San Jose win).

Not Getting Any Younger: Winging It In Motown

The Hawks can attempt to make history as a victory today will break the franchise record for best start, something this team tied last night as I’m sure you’re all aware by this point. It’s almost fitting then that the Hawks will attempt this record against their biggest rivals (at least historically). After last night’s game that was harder than it ought to have been the Hawks get no time to rest as the Scum have been waiting in Chicago since Friday’s victory over the Preds.

While You Were Sleeping – The Nemeses Within

You may have forgotten it all, so I thought I would try and remind you what the rest of the division got up to before we all went into hibernation. Just a quick primer.

Scum – You may vaguely recall that Nicklas Lidstrom retired after last year. While this will cause a lot of gushing during every Wings game this year and a lot of whining about how much they miss him, none of that will come from Wings fans in the know (so that’s Graham and JJ from Winging It). Because as Hawks fans who got awfully familiar with the sight of Hossa and Toews torching him to the outside last season, Lids was a mere shell of the legend that we remember.

However, after a big push for Ryan Suter to replace him came up empty,  the Wings are staring at a gaping hole on the blue line. They hilariously signed Carl Colaiacovo to do….something. Brendan Smith will be up full-time, whatever that does for you. And Kyle Quincey will be around for the full season. So….yeah, attack this.

But oh, will they whine about the travel in this shortened season. Lord how they will whine.
