  • Beard Of The Day – April 24th – Jim Gaffigan

    jim_gaffiganFeeling good after last night? I’m guessing Slak might not be. Regardless, the series is now tied up at two and we’re headed back down 55 for a game on Friday night. In the meantime though, we’re probably all in need of a little bit of lighter humor since these games have been just as stressful as we expected. Why not focus on a bit from Jim Gaffigan (born in Elgin!).

    Gaffigan has made an entire career out of making fun of his own laziness and American dietary habits. Gaffigan is so astute that he was even able to correctly predict the future of Dunkin Donuts foods. In addition to his great stand up, Gaffigan has been damn near omnipresent in some of the best pop culture has to offer, having roles in everything from The Daily Show, Flight of the Conchords, and Super Troopers. Not bad for a good rustbelt kind of beard.

    Here we are coming off the Blues best game of the series and the Hawks worst but yet we also saw the Hawks eek out a win, largely on the back of one Corey Crawford. After just barely getting a desperately needed win, there are still plenty of questions up in the air. Fels did a great job of covering most of them surrounding line up changes and other ideas in his post yesterday. There were some glaring and some minor issues we saw on Monday night so the question now is, will Q do anything to address them?

    The answer, of course, is no. No he won’t.

    Week 29 of the AHL schedule featured the IceHogs’ final 2 games.  The IceHogs still had a slim shot at making the post season going into their final games of the regular season, but the first game of the weekend sealed their fate of being on the outside, looking in.

  • Beard Of The Day – April 23rd – Allen Ginsberg

    16AllenGinsbergPA100811Can you imagine being a freshman in college and suddenly being introduced to Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs (sadly, neither of whom had beards)? Imagine if then you would go one to become not only a contemporary but perhaps one of the greatest writers of that generation. Allen Ginsberg did just that.

    Born in Newark, Ginsberg became a fixture on the burgeoning scene of “Beat” writers who saw promise in American youth and their future. His writing took on an incredibly raw form that would lead his best known poem “Howl” to be banned multiple times before being defended under the first amendment.

    At one point in the late 40’s, Ginsberg had what he called an auditory hallucination where he first believed to have heard the voice of God before realizing it was simply the voice of poet William Blake (also beardless). The multi-day event lead him to realize the interconnectedness of the universe that would later shape his belief in Buddhism. I can’t really say if this belief in pursuing perfection lead to his realization that facial hair is the ultimate form of masculinity but they certainly didn’t hurt Ginsberg’s belief in a long unruly beard.
