Angry At Numbers – Hawks Passing Stats

So Ryan Stimson, a contributor to InLouWeTrust.com, along with our friend Jen LC has been tracking passing stats for the Hawks this year. This stuff is pretty interesting. We ran this in the Indian last night, but I wanted to share it here as well. Follow him on Twitter @RK_Stimson. It’s pretty dizzying. So buckle up.

Much of the analytics community focuses on shot-based metrics as a proxy for puck possession in order to get an idea of which teams and players drive play. However, the two most popular metrics for this analysis, Corsi (all shooting attempts) and Fenwick (all unblocked shooting attempts), merely tell us what happened, but give no depth into how these players drive play for their teams. I endeavored to find out how teams create offense from passes.

And so it begins anew. Not so much the Original Six rivalry that mostly evaporated prior to the Wings finally getting their wish and moving to the Eastern Conference, but more the lamentation of that move and the longing for a rivalry that never really lived up to its own billing in the last 25 years in the first place save for a couple of blips on the radar, and one very emphatic punctuation mark ending it in 2013.  Now, a visit to Detroit is just another date on the calendar, and the only time the Hawks will visit the husk of the Joe this year.

  • The Fallout

    The Fallout

Well now that it’s done, it’s probably time to figure out where the Hawks go from here.

But before I head any further, this seems like a good time for a disclaimer or at least a warning. Every judgement we make on the Hawks on this site is viewed through the prism that they demand you view them through, which is anything short of a parade in June is failure. This is the standard they’ve set and the one they’ve asked to be held to. So while issues on the third pairing being the biggest problem is a biggest problem a lot of teams would like to have, that’s not how most teams are judged. I realize the Hawks are very good, will finish north of 100 points and very well might finish north of 110. Believe me, we get it. That’s not really the point. Keep that in mind all season before you threaten to shit in my mouth, which I have to say is a first.

Once More Unto The Breach – The $2.2 Million Dollar Question

House of Representin’: Silver Seven Sens

With no time whatsoever to dwell on last night’s steaming turd squeezed out on the shores of the Charles River (debatable whether or not that’d be an improvement), the Hawks stay within the Flortheast division with a trip up to Canada’s capital. No, not Toronto, Rand McNally. They’ll be in Ottawa to face off against the Senators, whose issues this season made whatever difficulties the Hawks had with the Bruins last night seem meager by comparison.
